I had arranged with the APS That I was aloud to remove stamp from cover to reveal the watermark direction before I sent it to them. Ken from APS said it would still count as being on cover. A 279 watermark direction in this direction ^ or top to bottom (Horizontal) of stamp. A 279A watermark is in this direction<> side to side( Vertical) What happened was the sheets of paper were placed in the wrong direction, The results were Scott 279A.This is the certificate I got back from the APS. They had to send another cert the first one had the covers wrong date on it even experts make mistakes some times Smile

Well I took a Pic from Roys  cover boxes. Well I was Impressed when I picked this out. This is Scott 279 on cover date 1899. As you all know well I soak off these stamps looking for the rare scott 279A watermark vertical<>. I was going to soak this stamp off but I remembered as I found doing research on Scott 279A type. The three that have been found and sent in for certificates are all canceled with Machine cancels only!!! This is a hand cancel So its fancy as well so I need not soak off cover Because it is not Scott 279A It is Scott 279. It was canceled with a hand cancel so none are scott 279A if they were canceled with a hand cancel or fancy cancel type. Remember that when collecting. Roys covers Rock Remember im an expert in Scott 279A I own two of the three recorded one on cover one off. All three are machine cancels. I think there were only a few sheets that were entered into to the press that were were reversed making scott 279A type. And sent to large cities none in small towns have been found.Happy collecting. NO HAND CANCELS> Im asking $35000.000 for my cover remember only machine cancels are scott 279A type to date.

Richard, you are right about Roy’s covers being amazing! Did you find this gem in the fifty cent box?

This arrived from Europe today. The Question is it Scot 279 or scot 279A in was sold as Scott 27A lol So ill get back to you I usually use lighter fluid to identify used stamps but I'm out of watermark fluid to use on mint stamps. I think it is only Scott 279. By the plate number. Time will tell. It goes to the PSE if it is a 279A not used as you know none have been recorded as not used to date from 1899.As i thought it is Scott 279.
