Oh riiiiiight, I'd often wondered why they're called cinderellas but had never bothered looking up the definition. Yours certainly makes sense, Janet! I also looked in my The Illustrated Philatelic Dictionary (by Canadian Stamp News, a handy-dandy little resource!) and they didn't elaborate on the word's origins either, just the actual definition.
