U.S. Scott C25 6 cent Air mail, Canceled by Charlottesville Virginia. ( Ken Lawrence) PF Expert, Helped me with this complicated cover. This is one of my favorite covers. The marking says RETRIEVED FROM H.M. SHIPS (not named) above RETRIEVED FROM MAIL ????? and RETURN TO SENDER markings.

"Via Clipper" was the sender's endorsement, posted at Charlottesville, Virginia, for trans-Atlantic air mail. During the 1942 deployments to Britain, the glut of mail to U.S. and Canadian servicemen exceeded the capacity of the Clippers. Many tons of letters prepaid at the concessionary 6¢ per half ounce air mail rate (not valid to Canadians), and all except government letters that weighed in excess of two ounces, went by surface ship transport. This one was prepaid for up to two ounces, bilingually marked Postage Stated Lost over the stamp remnant. It was examined by a British censor at London.
This cover is published by the APS, for this month, being stamp month. They liked my story about researching it>>.https://stamps.org/news/celebrating-national-stamp-collecting-month
