[Dear Mr. Babcock, Thank you for taking the time to share your views regarding trade and tariffs.

For far too long, poorly negotiated trade deals have failed our Nation, our workers, and our communities.  These broken policies allowed foreign nations to flood our markets with cheap goods, hollow out our manufacturing base, weaken our ability to produce essential goods, and create dangerous supply chain vulnerabilities that threaten both our economic strength and national security.

Under my leadership, we are once again putting our Nation’s interests first.  Beginning in April, I took action to address the economic conditions reflected in large and persistent annual trade deficits that constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to our national security and economy.  Under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977, I directed the use of responsive tariffs to strengthen America’s economic position and protect American workers.  I established a baseline 10 percent tariff on all trading partners and have imposed even higher reciprocal tariffs on countries that threaten our national security and economy by failing to sufficiently address imbalances in our trading relationship.

These reciprocal tariffs are restoring balance to a distorted global system and ensuring America is not being taken advantage of.  Already, companies are reshoring production, American-made goods are in demand, and our workers are finally competing on a fair playing field.  Foreign nations have returned to the negotiating table, and I am securing trade deals that prioritize fairness and reflect American interests.  These new deals are expanding markets for American producers, driving down costs for families, bringing jobs back to our communities, and empowering all citizens to succeed in a stronger, more independent economy.

As President, I will always put America First.  Through fair and reciprocal trade and a renewed focus on American production, my Administration is improving our competitiveness across every sector of industry, reducing our trade deficit, safeguarding our economic and national security, and restoring American prosperity.
