So just curious, Richard, is this ink that bled THROUGH the paper as the stamp was printed, or ink transfer from the stamp below it, say, on a bunch of stamp sheets all piled together after printing?

On an unrelated note, this is something else I decry at my age: I love and have used fountain pens since childhood, but have to spend money on Expensive Paper because modern everyday paper is simply not made for fountain pen ink, so it tends to bleed though... EWWWW!  Dodgy

So is bleed-through what happened here, d'ya think?

That's a good question. No It did not bleed through the lines are way off center ,From each other. It likely transferred from another sheet when it was stacked, But sometimes the sheet got printed on both sides and the printing does not adhere on the gum side as well as it would to the none gum side. I've seen this before its interesting. When they print the stamp some times they print on wet paper  that would account for the transfer if the sheet was not fully dry after printing.
