U.S. Scott 231 Remson, New York Jan 2 1893, Black Target cancel, First day PMK on reverse. PF certificate. About 20 First day use  covers exist. Remember that a first day Cancel is just important as if it was on a cover even  though it was  removed at  some point, Earl first days are usually Rare. This stamp was issued Dec 29 1892, There are one cover with that date, The actual release date was the next day, but it was a Sunday and almost all post offices were closed, There was one open in Salem New York so there are a few covers from January 1 1893. So they have excepted that Jan 2 1893 is the actual first day of release. The stamp on the bottom was likely sent out Jan 1st it being the received cancel of January 2 1893. Its been posted with the experts and none has said it wasn't January 2 1893. So ill leave it at that. Now the New York Jan 2, 3 pm, stamp has no year on it so it could be January 2 1894.

There are different Types of Broken hats some vary in size and angle here is an old chart on them. Ill up date the chart with a type E at a  later date.  And The Broken hat has been found on a type 2 frame or right hand side lower frame line Break. The all new combo break. Note the combo below Type one broken hat and lower right side broken frame line. just one broke in this stamp. Double click on stamp pic to see the clear break on the lower right side. This combo has not been recorded. APS is making certificates now for this new combo. I sent three in to record. They will arrive soon.

I've always liked this cover ,with the confederates flag Williamsburg Virginia Nov 23 1893, With Fancy block cancel. Note some of the  none advertised covers have a broken hat type stamp on  them or a date that i needed for my collection.
