Email me at richardziggy65@gmail.com RE: Wanted U.S. Scott 231 Broken hat types - Edward - 01-06-2026 Copy of my 231 broken hats. Thought I would try a post now that Roy has uploads working. RE: Wanted U.S. Scott 231 Broken hat types - Webmaster - 01-06-2026 Let's make this thread useful to those that don't know what a "broken hat" variety is (and don't own a Scott US Specialized catalogue). Who will volunteer to upload good enlargements of the regular and the variety? Rou RE: Wanted U.S. Scott 231 Broken hat types - Barbara - 03-06-2026 I'll volunteer! Here are two of the same stamp, the USA, 1893, Columbian stamp (Scott #231). Note the arrow pointing to the hat of one person in the crowd. The top stamp shows the brim of the hat solid, this is a "normal" version of this stamp. The bottom stamp shows the brim of the hat "broken" as if a bite was taken out of it. The bottom stamp is called the "Broken Hat".

This was caused by a printing plate flaw, and is very collectable and fun to find! Anything to add? RE: Wanted U.S. Scott 231 Broken hat types - Janet MacD - 05-06-2026 Roy, thank you for requesting an explanation and saving me from Googling. Barb, thank you for the very clear illustration and explanation! |
